"Bilbo"

Bilbo was cheerful, carefree, optimistic about the world. He loved peace, good food, and an after-dinner pipe. It seemed to him that he didn't like adventures, the love for them was awakened in The Hobbit only under the influence of Gandalf, although the wizard was well aware that Bilbo had them "in his blood".

Bilbo turned out to be a very brave hobbit. Though he never bragged about it, on the contrary, every time he was afraid that he would not be able to cope with the task, he always happily emerged from oppression, thanks to his strength of spirit. He knew how to sacrifice himself if necessary for his friends - he saved them from spiders with whom he had to fight hard. In the novel, he began as a burglar - a character who had to be clever, agile, inventive and courageous. It was he who discovered the secret entrance to the Lonely Mountain. He was patient and closely watched his surroundings. He showed the most courage and self-control during the meeting with Gollum, patiently playing riddles with the creature, and eventually escaping from him and the goblins.

Nor can Bilbo be denied nobility and wisdom. He knew justice was on the side of the Lake City people whose representative, Bard, had killed the dragon. The city was destroyed, however, and its inhabitants were entitled to some of the treasures guarded by Smaug, for if it were not for Bard, all the dwarves would have died inside Mount Erebor. That is why Bilbo had escaped from their camp at night and brought back the Arkenstone - the greatest dwarven treasure. This was the decisive factor for a peaceful bargain with the dwarves. It also took courage and dedication.

Though the dwarves owed him so much, he remained a humble hobbit. He didn't care about his treasures, he only wanted a happy return to his beloved home. For these qualities he was highly appreciated by Gandalf, who knew that the little hobbit has a big heart.

You can see how Bilbo has changed under the influence of the adventures. Carelessness gave way to wisdom, a tendency to think, reflect on the world and the laws that govern it. At first, the dwarves disregarded him a bit, complaining that he would not be able to cope with the mission. Gandalf, however, insisted that the hobbit accompanies them. Already on the way, Bilbo turned out to be irreplaceable - he saved the dwarves from the elven prison, found the ring, helped them disentangle themselves from their spider webs, discovered the entrance to the Lonely Mountain, first met Smaug and, thanks to his cleverness, discovered a weak point in his armor, brought the Bard the Arkenstone and contributed to the victory of the heroes on the side of good in the Battle of the Five Armies. It turned out that the other participants of the expedition obeyed Bilbo's position without reservations, it was he who told them what to do, even Thorin Oakenshield listened attentively to Bilbo's words. The Hobbit must have returned to Bag End completely different. He was smarter, more mature, more confident. Gandalf told him, “What happened to you? I do not recognize the former hobbit. " He enriched the advantages he already had and acquired new features. He managed to avoid the disadvantages - and this is the most important thing.

Everyone respected Bilbo, but the Hobbits were a little wary of him, considering him "crazy". Maybe because Bilbo had seen creatures and events they couldn't have known about. Fortunately, the hobbit didn't mind it. He remained cheerful and decided to write down his adventures in a diary titled There and Back Again. Gandalf says of Bilbo: "You are a very decent hobbit, Mr. Baggins, and I like you enormously, but still, you are only a modest little person in a very big world." This opinion has been shared by the readers of the novel for many years. Bilbo is a really nice, a bit funny hero - just like all of us. In times of need, however, he turns out to be a wonderful friend and companion - which each of us would like to be.
