"Merry"

"You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin - to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours - closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends, Frodo."
Meriadoc Brandybuck, or Merry for short, was a hobbit, one of Frodo's cousins and closest friends. He loved boats and ponies, and was interested in maps of Middle-earth.

Merry was born in the year 2982 of the Third Age. He was the only child of Saradoc Took and Esmeralda, Pippin's father's sister, which made them cousins. Merry was one of the brightest Hobbits - for example, he knew about the power of the Ring before Bilbo left the Shire. He also organized a "conspiracy" with Sam, Pippin, and Bolger to help Frodo. Also, even before the journey began, Merry was organized and ready, with ponies and provisions. His shortcut through the Old Forest also served the Hobbits well, for they avoided meeting the Nazgul and met Tom Bombadil, who was of great help to them. In Bree, he was not present during Frodo's jig with the Ring; was on a walk where he met the Nazguls. At Rivendell, he studied maps and planned their routes. Elrond was against Merry and Pippin going with Frodo, but Gandalf backed them, and Meriadoc became a member of the Fellowship as a result. At Amon Hen he was attacked and kidnapped by Uruk Hai, despite Boromir's brave defense. Escaping the orcs with Pippin, he encountered the Treebeard and Gandalf the White. He also drank Ent's water which made him grow considerably and become one of the tallest Hobbits in history.

He accompanied the ents in the attack on Orthank, and soon reunited with the rest of the Fellowship (as well as King Théoden of Rohan).

Merry, separated from Pippin, became Théoden's squire. During the great battle in the fields of Pellenor, he defeated the Wizard of Angmar, leader of the Nazgul, along with Eowyn disguised as a man. He lost his way then, but was found by Pippin, was cured by Aragorn, and fully recovered. For his wins on the battlefield, the new king of Rohan, Éomer, made him a knight. During the Battle of the Shire, he was first on the front lines to use the Horn of Rohan he had been given by Eowyn.

After the end of the adventure, Merry married a beautiful Estella Bolger. He was also famous throughout the Shire for his height. He became Lord of Buckland in year 11 of the Fourth Age. He had at least one son. At 102 he traveled to Rohan and Gondor, where he eventually died after long life. He was buried in Gondor, and when Aragorn died, he was reburied next to him and Pippin.

Merry was a very collected, smart and organized hobbit, much more than his companions from Shire. He was first hobbie I really loved, when I read The Lor of the Rings for the first time.
